Executive Summary

  • Gorgias is built for Shopify and ecommerce. It charges by ticket volume with unlimited agent seats, and lets agents edit, refund and cancel Shopify orders from inside the ticket.
  • Zendesk is a general helpdesk that works for any business. It charges per agent, offers deeper reporting and routing, and connects to Shopify through apps.
  • Gorgias usually suits Shopify-first brands with a few hundred to a few thousand tickets a month. Zendesk tends to suit larger teams, multi-brand setups or businesses that sell beyond Shopify.
  • Watch out for Gorgias overages during Black Friday and Zendesk add-on costs as your team grows.

Every couple of weeks we get on a call with a Shopify founder and, sooner or later, the same question pops up. “We’re finally getting off Gmail. Gorgias or Zendesk?”

Honestly, it’s a good question, and there isn’t a lazy answer to it. Both tools are solid. Thousands of stores use each of them. We happen to work inside both pretty much every day for different clients, so we’ve seen where each one makes life easy and where each one makes you want to throw your laptop.

So this is the comparison we’d have loved to read before our first setup. Nobody’s paying us to say any of it, and we’ll actually tell you what “it depends” depends on.

Gorgias vs Zendesk: The Short Answer

Mostly selling on Shopify? Team of a handful of people, maybe a couple dozen? Want agents to sort out orders without jumping into Shopify admin every five minutes? You’ll probably be happier on Gorgias.

Big support team with tiers and managers? Selling on several platforms, or juggling more than one brand? Need serious reporting and smart routing? Then Zendesk is usually the safer bet.

That’s the headline. Everything below explains why, so you can hold it up against your own store and see where you land.

What Is Gorgias?

Gorgias was built for online stores from day one, and Shopify is where it grew up. Email, chat, Instagram and Facebook DMs, SMS, phone calls, it all lands in a single inbox.

What really sets it apart is how tightly it’s wired into Shopify. Open a ticket and the customer’s orders are sitting right there in a side panel. From that panel, an agent can refund, cancel, change an address or send a replacement without ever opening Shopify. Saved replies can even drop in the order number and tracking link on their own.

What Is Zendesk?

Zendesk has been around forever, at least in software years. Banks use it. SaaS companies use it. Airlines use it. Retailers too. It was never really designed with online stores in mind. It was designed for customer service, full stop.

The upside of that is flexibility. Routing, reporting, automations, help centers, it’s all very mature and very powerful. Shopify plugs in through apps from the Zendesk marketplace, and those show order info inside the ticket. In our experience, though, what you can actually do to the order from inside Zendesk tends to be more limited than in Gorgias.

Shopify Integration: Where the Gap Is Biggest

For most Shopify brands, this is the bit that decides it, so let’s get specific.

In Gorgias, Shopify just feels like part of the tool. Order history, what’s in each order, tracking, how much the customer has spent over time, it’s all next to the ticket. Agents can act on the order right there. You can also set rules off Shopify data, say, automatically tagging anyone who’s spent over $500 as a VIP.

In Zendesk, you’ll normally add a Shopify app to see order details. It does the job, and plenty of teams are perfectly happy with it. But the moment you need to actually change something, a partial refund, a new address, you’re usually popping over to Shopify to do it. That’s maybe 20 seconds. Times a few hundred tickets a day, and it’s a real chunk of somebody’s afternoon.

So if your queue is mostly “where’s my order,” returns and “can I change my size,” this one difference might settle it for you.

Pricing: Tickets vs Seats

Here’s where they really split, and where we’ve watched a few brands get an unpleasant surprise a few months in.

Gorgias bills on how many tickets you handle, not on how many people use it. Right now its published plans start at $10 a month for 50 tickets, then $60 for 300, $360 for 2,000 and $900 for 5,000, a bit less if you pay yearly. Most plans let you add as many users as you like. Go over your ticket allowance and you pay extra, roughly $40 per additional 100 tickets on the Basic plan.

Zendesk bills per person, per month. On annual billing, its published prices currently go from $19 a seat for Support Team, to $55 for Suite Team, to $115 for Suite Professional. Pay monthly and it’s more. Extras like Copilot, its AI helper for agents, add roughly another $50 a seat.

Which comes out cheaper? Depends entirely on what your team looks like.

Picture six people handling about 1,500 tickets a month. On Gorgias, that’s around the $360 Pro plan, whether two people log in or ten. On Zendesk Suite Team, six seats is about $330, and Suite Professional is closer to $690.

Now picture Black Friday, when 1,500 tickets turns into 4,500. Your Zendesk bill stays put unless you add people. Your Gorgias bill climbs with overage, or you bump up a plan. That’s really the whole trade-off. Lots of people and fairly steady volume? Gorgias tends to win. Big swings in volume with the same small team? Zendesk is easier to budget for.

These prices move around a lot, so please check both pricing pages before you sign anything.

AI and Automation

Both companies have gone all-in on AI over the last couple of years.

Gorgias has an AI Agent that handles common questions and can do things on Shopify orders, like looking up status or kicking off a return. You pay per conversation it fully resolves, about $0.90 each on yearly plans and $1 on monthly, on top of your normal plan. In a quiet month that’s fine. In November it can climb fast, so it’s worth running your own numbers first.

Zendesk has its own AI agents plus the Copilot add-on, which helps your human agents with suggested replies, summaries and next steps. We’d say its AI is great for general support, while Gorgias’ AI feels more at home with ecommerce stuff right out of the box.

The old-school automation, macros, tags, auto-replies, rules, both do well. If you’re building those for the first time, our post on customer service macros for Black Friday has 12 templates you can drop into either tool.

Reporting and Routing

This one goes to Zendesk, especially once your team gets bigger. Routing tickets to whoever’s best at that type of question, tracking SLAs, building detailed custom reports, running several help centers. It’s all been there a long time and it’s very polished.

Gorgias reporting is good, and it’s built around ecommerce. One thing we like is that it can show how much revenue came from support conversations, which is handy when you need to prove your team’s worth. But if you’re after really granular operational reports or routing across lots of teams, Zendesk will probably feel more powerful.

Ease of Setup and Daily Use

For a Shopify store, Gorgias is usually up and running faster. Hook up Shopify, connect your email and socials, and you can be answering tickets the same day. New agents tend to get the hang of it quickly.

Zendesk has more knobs and dials. That’s great once it’s set up, but it means more work getting there. Smaller teams can manage on their own. Bigger setups really benefit from someone who’s done it a few times.

And look, a messy setup ruins any helpdesk. Macros nobody finished, five versions of the same tag, no routing at all, we see it constantly. Our Zendesk and Gorgias setup team spends a lot of October cleaning exactly this up before peak season.

When Gorgias Is the Better Choice

We’d point you toward Gorgias if Shopify is where most of your sales happen and most of your tickets are about orders, shipping, returns and changes. It also makes a lot of sense if several people answer tickets, maybe including an outsourced team, but your volume is fairly steady month to month. And if you want agents fixing orders without leaving the ticket, plus a tool new hires can pick up in a day, it’s hard to beat.

When Zendesk Is the Better Choice

Zendesk is the one we’d lean toward if you’ve got a larger team with clear roles and escalation tiers, or you sell on several platforms or run more than one brand. It’s also the better pick if advanced routing, SLAs and custom reports really matter to you, if your volume swings wildly and you’d rather pay per person, or if your support goes well beyond ecommerce, like B2B accounts or technical questions.

What About a Gorgias to Zendesk Migration (or the Other Way)?

Yes, you can switch, and lots of brands do. Both can import your old tickets, and your macros, tags and rules can be rebuilt on the other side. The hard part usually isn’t moving the data. It’s rebuilding your workflows properly and getting your team comfortable again.

Just please don’t do it in the middle of peak season. If you’re thinking about moving, ride out the holidays and make the switch in January when things calm down.

Our Take

For most Shopify brands handling somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand tickets a month, we tend to lean Gorgias. Those Shopify actions save real time every single day, and not paying per seat makes it easy to bring in extra help when it gets busy.

For bigger teams, multi-brand businesses, or anyone who lives and breathes reporting and routing, Zendesk is tough to beat.

But here’s the honest truth: the tool matters less than how it’s set up and who’s working in it. A tidy Zendesk will beat a chaotic Gorgias every time, and vice versa. If you’d like help setting either one up, or a team to run support inside it, our helpdesk setup and automation and outsourced customer support services cover both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gorgias or Zendesk better for Shopify?
For most stores that sell mainly on Shopify, we’d go Gorgias, mostly because agents can work on orders right inside the ticket. Zendesk tends to make more sense for bigger teams or businesses selling beyond Shopify.

What’s the best helpdesk for a Shopify store?
Really depends on how big your team is and how many tickets you get. Gorgias is the go-to for a lot of Shopify-first brands, and Zendesk suits larger or more complicated setups. Richpanel, eDesk and Freshdesk are worth a look too, and Shopify Inbox is fine if you’re tiny.

Is Gorgias cheaper than Zendesk?
Often, yes, if lots of people need access, since Gorgias charges for tickets and not seats. If you’ve got a small team and very high or very spiky ticket volume, Zendesk’s per-seat pricing can come out cheaper.

Does Zendesk integrate with Shopify?
It does, through apps in its marketplace that show order info inside tickets. You usually can’t do as much to the order from there as you can in Gorgias.

Can I use Gorgias or Zendesk with an outsourced support team?
Absolutely. Your outsourcing partner just logs into your helpdesk, so the data and reports stay yours.

Which is easier to set up?
Gorgias, usually, at least for a Shopify store. Zendesk gives you more control, but it takes longer to get everything configured properly.
